Federal prosecutors handed down an indictment against state Senator Wayne Bryant (D) Thursday on corruption and fraud charges.
R. Michael Gallagher, the former dean of the University of Medicine and Dentistry's (UMDNJ) School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford, was also indicted.
Bryant and Gallagher were named in a 20-count indictment released by U.S. Attorney Christopher Christie. Bryant is accused of unlawfully using his power and influence to milk the state?s pension program and nearly triple his own retirement benefits.
The indictment essentially accuses Bryant of using his position to land paid, ?no work? jobs. Prosecutors say he collected salaries and pension benefits from UMDNJ and other public employers. In exchange, the indictment revealed that Bryant would lobby for extra state funding for those employers.
?He leveraged his position and the power given to him by the state leadership to distribute money to get personal financial gain in return,? Christie said.
Gallagher is accused of using Bryant?s influence to become dean and in return, putting Bryant on the payroll at UMDNJ.
