There are few things more peaceful - or more Positively New Jersey - than a walk through a zombie mall on a rainy January day.
I discovered this on Friday as I took a stroll through Flemington's Liberty Village - the nation's first large-scale outlet mall. Today it sits largely empty and awaiting demolition.
With all but three stores closed and boarded up, the Borough of Flemington has declared the mall an area in need of redevelopment.
Developer Hoboken Brownstone has announced a plan to build housing, parks and a new borough hall.
For now, a stroll through the grounds provides a strange experience - and a chance to ponder New Jersey's history as a suburban mall mecca, as one more once-bustling complex fades into history.
