A bill that passed the state Assembly would allow New Jersey’s six largest cities to charge drivers a 3.5 percent tax for parking within their borders.

Newark, Jersey City, Paterson, Elizabeth, Edison, and Woodbridge would be affected.

State Republicans say it's because of high taxes.

"We have to stop the tax, after tax, after tax,” says Sen. Anthony Bucco, with the 25th Legislative District. “Our middle class and our constituents can no longer afford it. I ask you today, take a bold stand. Take a bold stand and say no to another new tax."

Under the bill, revenue would be used to finance projects improving pedestrian access to mass transit.
