Lawmakers have mixed reactions to the state Supreme Court?s decision giving same-sex couples the green light to receive the same benefits as heterosexual couples.

In a 4-3 decision, the court ruled Wednesday New Jersey must revise existing marriage laws to include either same-sex marriage or civil unions. The court also ruled the Legislature must make the change in 180 days. Senator Martha Bark (R-8th District) feels the time frame is unrealistic and says she fears issues like property tax reform will be neglected.

Other lawmakers, like Assemblyman Reed Gusciora (D-15th District), are throwing their support behind the ruling. Gusciora says he supports the idea of granting same-sex couples marriage licenses, rather than civil unions.

Governor Jon Corzine (D-New Jersey) and Democratic Senate President Dick Codey have indicated they prefer the term ?civil union.?
