The Breast Center at Saint Peter's University Hospital in New Brunswick held a contest Wednesday in an effort to promote breast reconstruction awareness for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Patients at the center designed decorative bras in all shapes and sizes.
The contest allowed patients and the community a chance to learn about the latest advances and techniques in breast reconstructive surgery. These new techniques include fat grafting and bioengineering new breasts.
Dr. Robert Herbstman says it is important to promote awareness.
"In New Jersey we enjoy a pretty widespread awareness for breast reconstruction," he says, "But, we found statistically across the country...that the awareness of breast reconstruction options is really less than 50 percent of patients."
Dr. Herbstman stresses that awareness and advocacy gives patients a chance to discuss all of their options before undergoing breast cancer treatments.
