A good Samaritan jumped into action and helped to rescue a mariner from the water when their 15-foot sailboat capsized Tuesday in the Barnegat Bay, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
Officials say Sector Delaware Bay command center watchstanders received a mayday call relayed by the good Samaritan at 5:36 p.m. They say the good Samaritan recovered the mariner from the water before handing him over to the coast guard.
The U.S. Coast Guard said the sailboat was righted by a commercial salvage boat and towed back to Ocean Gate Marina in Bayville.
Chief Petty Officer Matthew Whitlow said the mariner was wearing a life jacket and had a radio which helped.
“This is a great example of how everyone has a part when it comes to safety on the water,” Whitlow said.
No major injuries were reported.
The U.S. Coast Guard offered safety water tips and said always wear a properly fitted life jacket, let someone know plans, check on local weather conditions, swim in designated areas and follow all boating guidelines.
