Safe in Hunterdon County has become a safe haven for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault in a mostly rural area where services, like the ones provided by the organization, are few and far between.
Some of the programs available include counseling, a safe house, legal advocacy, a 24-hour hotline and domestic violence and sexual assault response teams.
"Out here we do have a lot of people who live in areas that are so rural that when you are on 20 acres, you might be calling for help and nobody will know," said executive director Lauren Biona.
The nonprofit was created in 1978 by the New Jersey Department of Children and Families. In the 45 years since its creation, the organization has grown to provide free services to women, men and children in Hunterdon County.
"All of the programs are completely free to our clients, and we are not income based and we do not operate on a sliding scale," Biona added. "People might come to us in crisis. The goal is within 30 to 60 days they're launching into a place where they can rebuild their lives in safety and hope."
In honor of International Women's Day, Safe in Hunterdon County is hosting an event in Flemington today. The 25% of the daily proceeds will go to the organization.
