Rutgers Athletics has launched a fundraising campaign to support cancer research and patient care following the cancer diagnosis of men's basketball coach Steve Pikiell.
The initiative, called "Rutgers Tough," includes the sale of limited-edition T-shirts, with all proceeds benefiting RWJBarnabas Health's cancer treatment and patient care programs. Rutgers said the shirts went on sale at the Scarlet Knights' men's basketball home opener and will also be available while supplies last.
In addition to T-shirt sales, Rutgers has established a donation fund through the Rutgers Cancer Institute to support cancer research. The institute is New Jersey's only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, according to Rutgers.
Pikiell, who is in his 11th season as head coach, announced Sept. 9 that he had been diagnosed with cancer and had undergone successful surgery. He continues to receive treatment, Rutgers said.
When announcing his diagnosis, Pikiell said he planned to approach the challenge the same way he coaches.
"Just as I ask my team to fight and embrace challenges head-on, I'm going to attack cancer the same way," Pikiell said.
