Rutgers fires head coach Chris Ash 4 games into season
Rutgers head football coach Chris Ash has been fired just four games into the season.
It comes a day after his team lost at Michigan, 52-0.
Ash got the job four years ago. He leaves with an overall record of 8-32. Against Big 10 competition – he went 3-26.
Ash took over the Scarlett Knights while it was mired in controversy, including academic fraud, player arrests and drug use.
There were in improvements in those off-the-field aspects, but nothing much to root about during the games.
In a statement, Athletic Director Pat Hobbs says, “This change is especially difficult because of the steadfast commitment that Chris and his family have made to our student-athletes. Progress has been achieved in many areas, but, unfortunately, that progress has not been realized on the field of play. As such, it is in the best interest of the program to make a change.”
Hobbs also fired the team's offensive coordinator.
Rutgers says Nunzio Campinale will serve as interim coach for the rest of the season. He once played for Bergen Catholic High School. He was hired by Ash last year.
Between the two coaches, Rutgers is still on the hook for more than $9 million. The athletic department says fund-raising money will be used instead of taxpayer dollars.
Campinale has his first press conference Monday at 12 p.m. The team hosts Maryland on Saturday.
