Rutgers University has banned house parties at fraternities and sororities for the rest of the spring semester after several alcohol-related problems this school year, including the death of a student.

In a statement Monday, New Jersey's flagship state university said the move comes because "Rutgers takes seriously its commitment to maintaining a healthy and safe campus environment."

Under the ban, house parties will be off limits for all 86 fraternities and sororities. But events such as spring formals, where licensed third-party vendors serve alcohol, still will be allowed.

A 19-year-old student died of alcohol poisoning in September after attending a fraternity party.

Several weeks later, a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity was hospitalized after becoming severely intoxicated. The national headquarters of Sigma Phi Epsilon indefinitely suspended the Rutgers chapter after the incident.
