A teenager could face serious trouble with the law resulting from a weekend car accident in Toms River that left a friend dead.
Police say a vehicle headed southbound on Route 35 around 9:30 p.m. Saturday hit a utility pole and overturned. Seventeen-year-old Anthony Casselli, a passenger in the vehicle, died from his injuries Sunday afternoon at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. At least one other teen remains hospitalized.
Authorities say Alex Aravena, the driver of the vehicle, is a 17-year-old with a provisional driver's license. A provisional license limits the number of passengers allowed in a vehicle, and police say the car was packed out with seven teenagers.
Toms River officials are investigating if the provisional license was violated and if speed was a factor in the crash.
Casselli was an accomplished wrestler at Roselle Park High School.
The school's principal says grief counselors were at the school Monday to speak with students. Police were stationed outside the school at dismissal time to ensure no students were violating provisional licenses.
