A school bus crashed into a telephone pole Monday afternoon in Roselle, injuring four students and two adults. One student and one adult were transported to the hospital, police say.

Officials say the driver told police she meant to hit the brakes but instead accelerated. The bus ran off the road, hit a telephone pole and caused extensive damage leading to downed wires, according to police. The bus came to a stop at the intersection of West 7th Avenue and Washington Avenue.

"Today's incident involving our children is deeply concerning, and the safety and well-being of our young ones remain paramount,” Roselle Mayor Donald Shaw said in a statement.

Roselle Police Department Traffic Safety is leading the ongoing investigation into this incident. Anyone with information is asked to call 908-245-2000.
