As Ukraine approaches its 35th Independence Day, members of Rockland County’s Ukrainian community are preparing to gather in New City this weekend while the war in their homeland continues.

"It's important to bring attention that the war is still going on and Ukraine needs help," said Oksana Hauser of Stony Point.

More than 1,600 days after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Hauser continues to advocate for her homeland.

Ukrainians are expected to gather Sunday, Aug. 23, 2026, at noon on the front steps of the Rockland County Courthouse in New City to mark the country’s 35th Independence Day.

"It's not even a celebration. It's recognition of its independence because it's hard to celebrate when people are dying every day on the front line. Civilians are being bombed," Hauser said.

The observance comes as the conflict continues in Ukraine. This week, at least 16 people were killed in Kyiv in a Russian missile strike, adding to the death toll from the years-long war.

"It's a very resilient community. They are a very resilient people," said immigration attorney Shaker Al Omoush, who has been helping Ukrainians and plans to attend the gathering Sunday.

Many Ukrainians currently have Temporary Protected Status until at least October.

However, he shared uncertainty surrounding immigration enforcement has created fear within the community.

Al Omoush emphasized the importance of working with legitimate legal representation when navigating the immigration process. "Families were deported, mainly due to the fact that the form was filled incorrectly or the deadline was passed or the application was filed without proper supporting documentation," he said.

Ukrainian Flag Day will also be observed Sunday.
