People of all ages are learning how to skateboard at an indoor facility in Fairfield that focuses on building confidence along with skills.

Shred.Co welcomes everyone from first-time riders to experienced skaters looking to improve their technique.

Founder and Executive Director Evan Dittig said the facility attracts parents who want to skate with their children, adults returning to the sport and people trying skateboarding for the first time.

"All abilities are welcome," Dittig said. "Anyone that wants to learn how to skateboard can come on by and get the basics."

The indoor skate space features ramps, rails and obstacles designed to help skaters safely develop their abilities.

The facility includes quarter pipes, grind rails and a halfpipe, along with a lounge area for families.

Dittig said instructors take a gradual approach to teaching.

"We kind of take it slow and have a mellow approach to learning how to skateboard," he said. "Teaching how to push, ride, balance and then building confidence."

Shred.Co offers private lessons, group classes, all-girls nights and community programs.

Dittig said the lessons are about more than learning tricks.

The word SHRED stands for Setting Goals, Helping Others, Respect, Expressing Yourself and Determination.

"The community in skateboarding is so awesome," Dittig said. "It's accepting for all walks of life."

He said skateboarding provides physical activity, a sense of accomplishment and encourages people to step outside their comfort zones.
