Tucked away in Short Hills is a historic garden where winding paths, fountains and hidden grottos create a peaceful escape from everyday life.
In this week’s Road Trip Close to Home, News 12’s Amanda Eustice visits Greenwood Gardens, a 28-acre property filled with gardens, woodlands and historic features.
Visitors are greeted by flowing fountains, scenic pathways and landscaped grounds designed to help people reconnect with nature.
“There is a lot here for anybody who is interested in connecting with nature and also just having all their senses revitalized,” said Executive Director Abby O’Neill.
The property was once a private estate before being restored and opened to the public in 2013.
Officials say two families helped shape Greenwood Gardens over the last century, creating the blend of styles visitors see today.
Guests can explore formal terraces, meadows, stone structures, grottos and one of the property’s signature attractions — a historic seven-tier cascading fountain originally built in 1916.
Senior Gardener Nate Adanson says the site’s unique character comes from the combination of different design influences over the years.
Visitors can tour the grounds on their own using a garden map or take part in guided tours to learn more about the property’s history.
Greenwood Gardens also hosts special events, including concerts and educational programs.
The gardens are open Fridays through Sundays through November.
