Road Trip Close to Home: Raritan cat lounge connects cats and community
Adoptable cats from local rescue organizations roam freely while they wait for their forever homes.
In Somerset County, there’s a place filled with playful personalities, plenty of purrs, and a mission that goes far beyond cute cats.
At Catcetera Cat Lounge in Raritan, every visit is different. You could be greeted by a curious kitten, find a cat stretched out for an afternoon nap, or meet one looking for a little extra attention.
This cat lounge was built on one simple idea.
“We are really inclusive, and we really want everybody to have a good time,” said Catcetera co-owner Wendi Zimmerman. “The whole idea of the name Catcetera was cats and other things. So, cats and community.”
That mission comes to life inside the lounge, where adoptable cats from local rescue organizations roam freely while they wait for their forever homes.
“We love being able to see the cats grow, become comfortable in their environment. A lot of times, when people want to adopt — we love shelters as well — it is kind of hard to gauge the personality of a cat when they are in a cage,” Zimmerman said. “But here, it’s their home. They feel comfortable. There is nothing that they’re scared of, and they can really be seen for who they are and hopefully find a home.”
But adoption isn’t the only goal.
For many guests, it’s also a chance to slow down, and for some, to experience being around cats for the first time.
“We have a lot of families, and we’re really excited to have kids be able to experience their first time here with us, petting cats and learning how to interact with them,” Zimmerman said.
