Wednesday morning's commute was a headache for drivers in Edgewater and Wayne.
Route 23 was closed in both directions in Wayne due to downed wires, but was opened by the afternoon. Police say the wires came down when a car hit a utility pole early Wednesday morning. The downed pole left about a dozen wires lying on the road, causing police to close the highway from Newark Pompton Turnpike to Packanack Lake Road. Authorities say no one was injured in the accident.
In Edgewater, a power line caught fire on Gorge Road. Authorities say the blaze was extinguished quickly, but the road remains closed between River Road in Edgewater and the Cliffside Park border.
Officials say it is not yet known what caused the line to catch fire, but the incident left 14 customers without power for hours.
