A carnival ride that broke apart at the Ohio State Fair, killing one person and injuring several others, was previously set up at the State Fair Meadowlands in New Jersey.
Tyler Jarrell, 18, was killed Wednesday when the ride known as The Fire Ball malfunctioned. Part of the ride broke off, and some of the riders were flung away.
Manalapan-based Amusements of America owns The Fire Ball ride. The company’s website states that The Fire Ball swings riders 40 feet above the ground while spinning them at 13 revolutions per minute and has become "one of the most popular thrill rides on the AOA Midway."
No one from AOA was willing to speak with News 12 New Jersey Thursday when a reporter visited their headquarters.
The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs said four Fire Ball-style rides are approved to operate in New Jersey, including the one that malfunctioned in Ohio. The ride passed inspection when it was set up at the State Fair Meadowlands in East Rutherford earlier this month. It also passed inspection prior to the incident in Ohio.
The currently ongoing Monmouth County Fair has a similar ride known as The Wild Claw. Although the ride is owned by a different company, it has the same Dutch manufacturer as The Fire Ball.
The Wild Claw had passed inspection before the fair opened Wednesday, but it was immediately shut down as a precaution after the incident in Ohio.
“I think that it’s the safe thing to do,” said Monmouth County Fair chairman Matt Coleman. “Our main objective is the safety of the fairgoers.”
Coleman said state inspectors came to check out The Wild Claw Thursday morning and officially put it out of service until further notice.
All other rides at the Monmouth County fair will remain open. The fair runs until Sunday.
