Police are searching for whoever beheaded a swan in Little Silver, and now the Monmouth County SPCA is offering a $500 reward in the animal cruelty case.
Authorities still don't know much more than they did in December when the harmed bird was found floating in the Little Silver Creek.
The beheaded bird was found near the dock off Little Silver Point Road before the creek froze over. Authorities believe the swan was lured with food and forcibly held down.
Betty Butler, of Rumson, and a former waterfowl rescuer, is outraged over the crime.
"To behead a trusting animal in this way, in our midst, was very threatening and shocking," she says. "Any kind of cruel inhumane acts is a threat on all of society."
The SPCA says it only offers a reward two or three times each year, but there are no leads in the case, and it says a reward was the only option.
