The Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office is urging drivers to make safe driving a priority following an increase in deadly crashes.
Last year, a total of 14 people died from crashes throughout Somerset County.
However, as of August 31, 2026, there have been 16 deadly crashes resulting in 16 deaths involving drivers, passengers, pedestrians and motorcyclists in Somerset County. This already exceeds the total number of fatal crashes recorded last year.
The prosecutor’s office says half of those crashes this year resulted in criminal charges against drivers due to risky behavior and poor choices behind the wheel, ultimately saying, “these crashes were preventable.”
The Somerset County Prosecutor’s Office’s goal is to raise awareness and encourage responsible driving, including obeying the speed limit, stopping for red lights and stop signs, giving walkers the right of way at crosswalks, not driving while under the influence, and putting down the phone to keep eyes on the road.
