Sunday kicked off the start of hurricane season, and residents are being advised to make sure they're ready if one hits the Garden State.

A hurricane has not directly hit New Jersey for almost 200 years. Experts say residents should still have an evacuation plan and disaster kit ready in case of emergency.

FEMA recommends keeping non-perishable food and enough water to last for at least 72 hours. Keeping a first aid kit, insurance and identification papers and prescription medication handy are also suggested.

The organization also advises homeowners to review their policies with insurance agents. Homeowners may want to consider obtaining flood insurance to further safeguard themselves.
