A number of Bergen County residents are up in arms over a proposal to build a methadone clinic in Lodi.

Clinic operators want to set up the center on Main Street, but residents say the location is too close to schools and homes with children and other susceptible targets.

"It's 10 feet from a senior citizen complex and it's 100 feet from a school," says resident Walter Curioni. "So with that in mind, those most vulnerable are those who will confront these people on a daily basis."

Supporters say methadone is only a legal option for those trying to get clean and the center will help addicts wean themselves off illegal drugs. Curioni feels the site is still inappropriate despite good intentions.

"Methadone clinics, they have a place - but the place should be under supervision of a hospital which is where they usually are," he says.

Clinic representatives were unavailable for comment.
