It was a normal walk through their Pheasant Run neighborhood in Lacey Township for Jake and John Brennan – but earlier in the week, it was anything but.
Brennen and his family were forced out of their home on Tuesday during a mandatory evacuation due to the Jones Road Wildfire.
"We were nervous, my wife and I. What was on our mind was California and how bad it got...so when they said, ‘get out,’ we got out," said John Brennan.
While smoke has decreased in the neighborhood, it can still be seen along Old Shore Road. Crews worked to put out hotspots from the fire that started burning on Tuesday morning near the Greenwood Forest Wildfire Management area.
"This is an active situation during a time of a declared emergency and if the winds pick up tomorrow like their supposed to…we could be fighting it all over again," said Lacey Township Mayor Peter Curatolo.
Curatolo says he's thankful to have received support from as north as Sussex County, all the way south to Cape May.
Those in the township are keeping their fingers crossed that better news will continue to come as crews say they will stick around for as long as they need too.
