Some residents living in a
New Brunswick condominium complex were without water Tuesday morning for the third
time in a week.
Crews worked to
restore service to residents just before 11 a.m. in the Renaissance Plaza
Square development on Richmond Street.
Another one of the century-old
pipes burst overnight. The first break came last week.
“That was Wednesday and
that was a good four, five, six hours, then Friday into Saturday further down
the street. Nobody knows why, same thing and then this one was a
bigger one this morning,” says Robert Bartolo.
With some of the water
pipes dating back to the late 1890s, officials say the breaks do tend to
come in clusters and are not surprised by the three breaks
this past week.
“It can be challenging at
times,” says Alexei Walus, with New Brunswick Water Utility. “We’re on an
aggressive water main replacement program, but there’s 100 miles of water
main in the city and a lot of them are 100, 120 years old.”
Residents
who lost water had it returned by noon and, aside from running
off cloudy water, did not have any issues, according to the city water
utility.
