Accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein's autopsy shows he had multiple breaks in his neck bones, according to a report in the Washington Post.

The paper reported that among the bones broken in Epstein’s neck was the thyroid bone. Forensic experts say that these types of breaks can occur when someone hangs themselves. But the Post reports that they are more commonly found in victims of homicide by strangulation.

Epstein died over the weekend at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York while awaiting trial on sex-trafficking charges involving dozens of underage girls.

Officials say that he took his own life, although he had been under a suicide watch for a time. That suicide watch had ended by the time Epstein supposedly took his own life.

Two prison staff members who'd been guarding Epstein failed to check on him for roughly three hours. Both have been placed on administrative leave.

Under suicide watch, the lights are left on all night, inmates are not allowed bedsheets or other things they can use to harm themselves, and they are monitored round-the-clock by someone making notes every 15 minutes. Prison experts say such restrictions are intended for only short periods because they put too much stress on the staff and inmate alike.

Epstein’s death continues to be surrounded by mystery, leading to many conspiracy theories surrounding it.

Some, including President Donald Trump, have suggested without evidence that Epstein may have been killed to prevent him from giving investigators more details about his alleged sex trafficking activities. The conspiracy theories state that many prominent people are involved in the sex crimes.
