NJDOT and other emergency agencies to conduct hurricane evacuation exercise starting Thursday

As hurricane season approaches, crews will come together to coordinate and practice response activities in the event of a major hurricane.

New Jersey Department of Transportation, in partnership with the New Jersey State Police, the New Jersey Turnpike Authority and several other agencies will be conducting an annual hurricane evacuation exercise beginning Thursday Aug. 7.

As hurricane season approaches, crews will come together to coordinate and practice response activities in the event of a major hurricane.

During this exercise motorists will see an increased presence of police and work crews along various highways. Staging cones, signs, and message boards in specific locations will be placed along these roads. The following key shore evacuation routes are listed below:

  • Atlantic City Expressway (entire length from Atlantic City to Washington Township)

  • Garden State Parkway (Milepost 0 in Lower Township to Milepost 38 in Egg Harbor)

  • I-195 (Milepost 6 in Robbinsville to approximately Milepost 34 in Wall)

  • Route 72 (Milepost 13.8 in Barnegat to approximately Milepost 29 in Ship Bottom)

  • Route 47 (Milepost 16 to 21 in Dennis, and approximately Milepost 32 to 35 in Maurice River)

  • Route 347 (Milepost 0 in Dennis to approximately Milepost 9 in Maurice River)

No roads will be closed during this drill. NJDOT officials encourage riders to check there social platforms and www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and updates.
