There is welcome news for anyone who drives in Hoboken - the paving of Park Avenue in the city is nearly complete. Road crews made it all the way to 16th Street at the Park Avenue Bridge on Friday.
Road crews started dropping asphalt on the road by 7:30 a.m. before rollers slowly drove along Park Avenue until it was perfectly flat.
This is a project that spans the entire length of Park Avenue in Hoboken - a 1.4-mile stretch from Observer Highway to 16th Street.
It is a heavily traveled road that desperately needed some help.
Marcin Koc was managing the project for Smith-Sondy Paving Contractors.
“It was in very bad condition. It needed some love, so that’s why we are out here getting these roads fixed up,” Koc says.
The work started on Monday. On Friday, crews made it to the border with Weehawken and stopped at the Park Avenue Bridge. Since the bridge is concrete it will not be paved.
The paving did cause some traffic delays. The worst of it for drivers was between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. When the Park Avenue bridge closed, the Willow Avenue bridge became the best alternate for drivers and quickly became clogged.
At times 16th Street was also backed up. But the roads are reopening as the asphalt cools.
But there is nothing cool about this work. The men worked in 90-degree heat alongside asphalt that pours out at 400 degrees.
“These guys do it every day, so you do get used to it. A lot of water in the coolers, good to go,” says Koc.
Work will continue Monday on the Weehawken side of the bridge and then it’ll be done.
