Democratic Rep. Andy Kim announced a bid to challenge Sen. Bob Menendez in next year’s Senate primary.
The announcement comes as Menendez and his wife pleaded not guilty in federal court to bribery charges.
"This isn't an indictment just about certain crimes that were unrelated to work. It was about his work. It was about foreign policy, as the Senate chairman of the Foreign Relations committee, it was about legislation, it was about investigations, and that's what I think makes this particularly concerning,” says Kim.
Kim says he knew exactly who he was dealing with.
“I had my concerns. That doesn't make the allegations in the indictment any less stunning. It was, even for people who have known and watched him and had concerns, the level of accusations was severe,” says Kim.
The congressman says that his decision to challenge Menendez comes from a desire to restore public trust in government.
