Taxpayers in East Hanover Township headed to the polls Tuesday to vote on a school repair referendum.
The school district needs a $953,000 bond approved to repair the roof and replace windows at Frank J. Smith Elementary School. District officials say the school is the township?s oldest and only elementary school. If the referendum is passed, taxes will increase by approximately $30 per household. The district believes that is a small price to pay to safeguard the children.
Most taxpayers agree repairs are needed at the school before matters get any worse. However, some taxpayers wish the district could have added the project to its original $13 million referendum in 2002. If the referendum passes, work on the school?s roof and windows will begin this summer.
