Work has begun to renovate a historic Negro League baseball stadium in Paterson.
Officials broke ground Wednesday to renovate Hinchliffe Stadium. Developers will also build an affordable senior housing building, parking garage, restaurant and event space at the site.
Mayor Andre Sayegh says that they broke ground on April 14 because No. 14 was the number that Larry Doby wore. Doby was a Paterson native and the second Black player to break baseball’s color barrier.
“Larry Doby and Monte Irving played in this ballpark here,” says former professional baseball player Harold Reynolds. “if you play baseball at any level, this should be important to you.”
The rehabilitation effort will cost $94 million.
