First a hurricane and then a fire swept through the world famous Seaside Heights boardwalk in an 11-month span. Four years later, the rebuilding process continues.
Tuesday marked four years since a massive wind-driven fire engulfed the Funtown Pier in Seaside Heights, destroying nearly 50 businesses after a more than five-hour firefight. The flames quickly spread down the boardwalk to neighboring Seaside Park.
The area was still recovering after Superstorm Sandy, which hit the previous October. Officials ruled the fire started from an electrical issue under the boardwalk caused by damage from the superstorm.
In those four years since the fire, many businesses rebuilt and returned, but sections of the boardwalk remain under construction.
This June new businesses opened up, including a beach bar and the popular Playa Bowls.
“We're back. We're back. Let it be known: Seaside's back,” Playa Bowls manager Kenny Mack said.
More businesses are expected to return by next summer.
