REAL ID enforcement began at airports across the country on Wednesday, following nearly 20 years of delays.
A REAL ID - or a passport - is needed to board a domestic flight, but many New Jersey residents have been struggling to get the new identification due to difficulties getting an appointment with the state Motor Vehicle Commission.
For those who have not been able to get a REAL ID yet, the Transportation Security Administration says they will still be able to board a plane for now, but that the screening process may take much longer. They will also be asked to bring as much identification as possible.
The MVC says it is adding more appointments for those who still need a REAL ID. Beginning May 20, the agency will add approximately 5,200 additional appointments during "Real ID Tuesdays."
Customers were able to begin booking appointments for "Real ID Tuesdays" on May 5 by going to the NJMVC's online appointment scheduler.
