A Paramus high school student and two teachers are recovering after handling a rabid coyote Thursday.
The Paramus Catholic High School student was waiting for his school bus on Paramus Road when he saw an animal he thought was a dog get hit by a car. He picked up the coyote and brought it into the school to help it. Two teachers realized what the animal was and informed the teen. The coyote then bit the student on the fingers and forearm as he was leaving the school building.
All three are being treated with rabies shots after the coyote tested positive for the disease. Health officials say this is only the second reported rabid coyote in Bergen County since the early 1990s.
