A Ramapo College senior studying abroad in Paris says that her life has been forever changed by the attacks.
Elmwood Park native Gelline De Guzman tells News 12 New Jersey that she knew her experience abroad would shape her but never imagined it would be like this.
De Guzman went to see her first soccer match, France vs. Germany, when two bombs went off outside the stadium. However, she says that she had no idea what was happening until after the game and she made her way to the subway.
"All of a sudden everyone starts running and my roommate and I, we just start running too because we thought there were shooters at the stadium," she says.
De Guzman says that all she kept thinking is that the stadium could have had the most causalities if things went differently.
She adds, "I just saw the panic and it's life-changing. The environment around you just changes so dramatically."
De Guzman returned to class Monday and says that she is surprised that the streets of Paris are as busy as they are.
"I'm actually a little shocked but it's actually comforting to know that everyone is out and about," De Guzman says.
Although her parents told her she could come home if she wants, De Guzman says she won't come home until the semester ends next month.
