Radiologist testifies at shaken-child death trial
A radiologist testified Thursday at a courthouse in Freehold for the prosecution at the trial of a woman who is accused of deadly child abuse.
Noting the bleeding and swelling of 14-month-old Mason Hess' brain, the radiologist from the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia said that child abuse caused Mason's death.
A defense attorney for baby sitter Michelle Heale asked whether the child's injuries could have been caused by a congenital brain defect. The radiologist rejected the theory, answering, "No."
Heale allegedly violently shook Mason as she baby-sat him three years ago inside her Toms River home.
Testimony continues Friday, with another doctor expected to take the stand for the prosecution.
If convicted, Heale, who remains free on bail during the trial, faces life in prison.
