A family from West New York was staying at the beachfront condo in Florida when it collapsed on Thursday.
The search for those unaccounted for in the partial collapse continued on Saturday as Miami’s mayor announced a rise in the death toll to at least five people. Over 150 people are still unaccounted for.
The Aguero family, from West New York, was on vacation in Surfside, staying at the beachfront condo when it began to collapse.
“The whole building is sheared off. We can literally see the roof caved in and then just darkness,” says Janette Aguero.
Albert Aguero adds, “I'm thinking we're racing against the clock because the rest of the building is going to come down…I'm thinking, if I start to feel something come down, how do I jump on my daughter to save her?”
A Lakewood couple who was on vacation is still unaccounted for, and New Jersey resident Staci Fang was found dead.
Miami officials say they continue to search for more survivors using different equipment and K9 units.
The Aguero family headed home to West New York Saturday night.
