A chance to come together and advocate for a safer world for women, girls and families. That was the mission behind a community unity walk Wednesday by the YWCA of Yonkers.

This walk is part of the “week without violence” initiative. It’s a movement aimed at creating safer communities.

"The idea is to support women, nurture mothers, families and children against violence and domestic violence which is a big deal,” says CEO of the YWCA of Yonkers, Charlie Knight.

Knight says she is noticing an increase in victims of domestic violence seeking resources and help.

"We have victims of domestic violence come in almost daily. Our goal is to get them into a safe place,” Knight tells News 12.

Knight says they are calling for an end to the violence.

The unity walk held Wednesday was centered around peace, healing and hope.

The walk ended at Lincoln Memorial Park in Yonkers. That’s where there was a community health fair to get people connected to resources like mental health services.
