With temperatures reaching above 90 degrees for the fifth day in a row, animal experts are reminding pet owners to make sure they are keeping their animals cool.
Experts say one way is to let animals pounce around in some cool water.
The staff at the Somerset Regional Animal Shelter in Bridgewater showed News 12 New Jersey crews some of their puppies playing around in a small pool.
Animal experts say that it is up to pet owners to make sure that their pets are protected from extreme heat.
“Pets can't really regulate their own body temperature. So we need to ensure that we are doing it for them,” says animal control officer Nancy Gedbaw. “Keeping them in the shade, keeping them in the air conditioning. When temperatures are about 85 degrees, especially, it's very difficult for dogs to breathe and get cooler."
It is also recommended to make sure pets’ water bowls are kept full so that the animal can stay hydrated on hot days.
