A domestic incident in Phillipsburg led to the shooting of a police officer, a woman and the death of the shooting suspect, according to Warren County Prosecutor James Pfeiffer.
The incident occurred at 10 Hanover St. around 1:15 p.m.
According to the prosecutor, the suspect opened fire on police as soon as they arrived at the scene. The bullet “went through the driver-side door and struck him in the leg.”
A woman, who had not been identified as of Saturday night, was shot in the torso. Both the woman and the officer were airlifted to St. Luke’s Hospital in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Pfeiffer said it is believed the suspect died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators were still on the scene late into the afternoon processing evidence.
News 12 New Jersey was told that the officer suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. The female victim was conscious and alert while being taken to the hospital.
Authorities had not released any names pending family notification as of Saturday night.
Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin released a statement that reads in part, "The Warren County Prosecutor's Office is continuing to investigate the incident. Our thoughts are with both victims as they begin their physical and emotional recoveries."
Gov. Phil Murphy tweeted, "Our thoughts are with a Phillipsburg police officer who was shot in the line of duty today. We are praying for a full and speedy recovery."
The mayor of Phillipsburg told News 12 New Jersey that he visited the officer and said he was in good spirits.
