A Garfield man is facing attempted murder charges after he allegedly shot an apparent car burglar in the back.
The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office says that the shooting happened early Tuesday morning near Farnham Avenue. Officials say that Omar Smadiya, 37, grabbed a handgun and confronted Christopher Manon-Velez, 19, who was allegedly attempting to burglarize Smadiya’s car.
Prosecutors say that Smadiya shot Manon-Velez in the back as Manon-Velez attempted to run away from the area.
Smadiya is now facing attempted murder and weapons charges, including possessing a high-capacity magazine.
Manon-Velez is recovering at the hospital. He has been charged with third-degree burglary.
