A 36-year-old man has been charged in connection with the death of his girlfriend’s 7-year-old son.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office says that Mark Harper was charged with endangering the welfare of a child in relation to the death of Aydin Brown.
Authorities say that Newark police were called to a home on the 100 block of Weequahic Avenue Monday morning for reports of an unresponsive child. Brown was taken to Beth Israel Medical Center for treatment, but was pronounced dead a little after 9 a.m. He was a second-grader at University Charter School in Newark, according to officials.
Authorities have not released any details on the boy’s injuries, but police did say that he suffered some sort of “trauma.” Autopsy results to determine the cause of death are pending.
Officials say that Harper was watching the boy at the time of the incident.
