A Hudson County corrections officer has been accused of the murders of two women in Newark, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
Authorities say that 24-year-old John Menendez is facing two counts of murder and weapons offenses charges.
According to the prosecutor, a woman suffering from a gunshot wound was found near Edison Place and Bruen Street in Newark Tuesday around 9 p.m. A second woman was found shot on the 100 block of Haynes Avenue.
Both women died from their wounds. They were identified as 40-year-old Anna Shpilberg of Randolph and 40-year-old Luiza Shinkarevskaya of Riverdale.
Authorities say that it is believed that Menendez and Shpilberg were involved in a romantic relationship.
The shootings remain under investigation.
