Prosecutor: Brothers charged in shooting that killed Newark woman celebrating birthday

Authorities have announced two arrests in connection with the killing of a Newark grandmother who was shot on March 11, 2021 while celebrating her birthday.

Authorities have announced two arrests in connection with the killing of a Newark grandmother who was shot on March 11, 2021 while celebrating her birthday.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has arrested two brothers, 21-year-old Jonathan Ritchie and 19-year-old Josiah Ritchie. They are accused of killing 63-year-old Debra Derrick.
Both men are charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
Officials say that the shooting happened on March 21. Derrick was at her home located on the 200 block of Lehigh Avenue. She was releasing balloons to celebrate her birthday and the birthday of her late twin sister when she was shot.
The brothers are being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility.
