A 6-year-old girl has died in a multialarm fire at a Bayonne home, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.
The fire was reported just after 11:30 p.m. Sunday at a two-story home located at 438 Avenue C. The prosecutor says that firefighters found the girl unresponsive while trying to douse the fire. She was identified as Saniya Felton. Felton was pronounced dead just after 1 a.m. Monday.
Neighbors tell News 12 that the girl's brother tried to escape with her out of a window, but was not able to get her out.
Officials say four people and three firefighters were treated for minor injuries. The Office of Emergency Management and the American Red Cross are helping seven people displaced by the fire.
The Hudson County Regional Arson Task Force and the Bayonne Fire Department are investigating the fire. Officials say foul play is not suspected.
Neighbors and members of the community gathered Monday evening for a vigil in the girl's honor.
Anyone who might have information about this fire is urged to call the prosecutor’s office at 201-915-1345.
