New Jersey hospitals that care for the uninsured may find themselves in critical condition under Governor Jon Corzine's (D-NJ) new budget plan.
The governor is proposing to cut $70 million in aid to hospitals such as Raritan Bay Medical Center in Perth Amboy, which provides charity care. Mike D'Agnes, president of Raritan Bay, says last year the hospital lost $9 million due to treating uninsured patients. He says the hospital has also cut jobs and reduced spending, so losing state funds would be devastating.
D'Agnes believes if the governor's plan is adopted, it will force some of the state's remaining 82 hospitals to close.
