A state investigation has been launched into the death of an emaciated and dehydrated woman found in the care of a state-sponsored home for the developmentally disabled.
Tara O'Leary, 29, weighed only 43 pounds when she was found. O'Leary had been living in the care of state-sponsored caretaker Debra Sloan for 10 years.
O'Leary was removed from the home and hospitalized before passing away two weeks ago.
O'Leary's family and state legislators are concerned about the 1,200 other adults living in similar homes around the Garden State.
"We are here today to call on the attorney general to hold criminally responsible those that are and to make sure this never happens again," says state Sen. Jennifer Beck (R).
According to the Department of Human Services, O'Leary's caretaker has been suspended while it investigates.
