Unruly passenger forces Newark-bound United flight to divert to Maine

The flight from Milan landed safely in Bangor, where law enforcement removed the passenger before the plane continued to Newark.

A United Airlines flight bound for Newark Liberty International Airport was diverted to Maine on Tuesday after the crew reported an unruly passenger.

United Flight 18, which departed from Milan, Italy, landed safely at Bangor International Airport around noon, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

United said law enforcement met the plane after it landed and removed the passenger. The flight later continued to Newark.

The Boeing 777 was carrying 274 passengers and 13 crew members, according to the airline.

The FAA said it will investigate the incident. The agency said airlines have reported 1,200 unruly passenger incidents so far in 2026.
