Reports of an armed person on the Ramapo College campus in Mahwah have been determined to be “unfounded,” according to Mahwah police.

The lockdown went into effect Thursday evening.

An emergency alert sent to students told everyone on campus to seek shelter indoors and lock or barricade the doors. All those not on campus were urged to stay away.

Mahwah police say that while it appears that campus is safe, the lockdown remained in place for a time while officers continued a search “out of an abundance of caution.”

Officers left the area just before 8:30 p.m.

"The lockdown has been lifted. The incident was unfounded. There was no active threat at any time on campus.  Additional police officers may be seen on campus to assist with traffic," police wrote in a Facebook post.
