President Joe Biden is in
New
Jersey to visit areas that were among the hardest hit by Ida.
The president is scheduled
to come to
Manville, which was not only impacted by major flooding conditions but also had at least three building explosions: two homes and a catering hall.
The borough is one of the spots in the state hit hardest by last week's
storm. Ten inches of rain fell and numerous water rescues had to be
performed. Manville is surrounded on all sides by the Raritan River.
Somerset County is
one of the six counties for which Biden approved a disaster declaration.
The other counties are Bergen, Gloucester, Hunterdon, Middlesex and
Passaic.
Gov. Phil Murphy says work is being done to add
other heavily impacted counties across the state, calling it a “work in
progress,” and that the topic will be a major talking point with the president.
"So, this is the first six,” says Gov. Murphy. “The most obvious
six. But not necessarily the last six, and so we're going to stay in there
fighting to get other counties added to that list."
Impacted residents and business owners in the six approved counties can
now request assistance
HERE, or by calling
1-800-621-3362. Calls will be
taken daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
New Jersey isn't the
president's only stop today. He'll also be checking out damage in Queens, New
York.
