The federal government is investigating possible chromium contamination in Garfield.
The Environmental Protection Agency is conducting a removal assessment in Garfield. The agency is investigating to see if chromium has leaked inside any of the approximately 600 homes and business there.
Chromium is a carcinogen used by many companies located in Garfield.
The area has a history of chromium contamination, partially due to the proximity between industrial and residential buildings. The EPA previously responded to a big leak in 1983.
The EPA says it will hold an informative meeting in mid-September.
